About Amami

Where is Amami?

Amami Oshima (奄美⼤島, Amami Oshima) is the island situated between Kyushu and Okinawa and belongs to Kagoshima Prefecture.

It is called as Amami archipelago (Amami Oshima Gunto) , consists of mainland Amami and other islands (Kikaijima, Tokunoshima, Okinoerabujima, Yorontou, Kakeromajima, Ukejima and Yoroshima, etc). You will reach to Amami mainland in less than three hours flight from Tokyo.

Amami History and Culture

Because Amami is an island where the Ryukyus (Okinawa), Satsuma (Kagoshima) and Yamato (Mainland Japan) cultures merge, the culture is slightly different from Okinawa despite it’s geographic closeness. The landscape and architectural style are somewhat different from Okinawa, and you may feel the rural atmosphere. Learning the history and culture of Amami at “Amami History and Ethnic Museum” located in Naze town should be one of the enjoyment.

Nature of Amami

Amami is full of nature, as being a candidate of the World Natural Heritage Site. There are many tropical plants and creatures including mangrove forests, Amami rabbit, Rurikaesu (tropical bird only seen in Amami). The weather is warm to hot through the four seasons and you may feel like a paradise.

Access to Amami

Direct flights are available to Amami airport in Amami Oshima from Tokyo (Narita, Haneda), Osaka (Kansai, Itami), Fukuoka, Kagoshima and Okinawa.
